Rooted in a vision developed by Cornell faculty, the House System on west campus is an upper-level undergraduate community emphasizing interaction with faculty members, cultural and intellectual programming, and opportunities for self-governance and independence.
The activities of each house are facilitated by a house dean and assistant dean, 30 house fellows, and six graduate resident fellows who all play active rolls in enriching the residential experience.
Most residents occupy suites that have a common living room and bathroom. Each house also has its own common areas and library, as well as rooms for computing, seminars, academic support, and socializing. Students participate in a house meal plan, enjoying intimate meals in their own dining hall. The nearby Noyes Community Recreation Center serves as the social and recreational hub on west campus.
When the transformation on west campus is complete in 2009, about 1,800 students will reside in the House System. Alice Cook House opened in 2004, Carl Becker House opened in 2005, and Hans Bethe House opened in 2007. Two more houses are slated to open in 2008. The House System ultimately will incorporate all the Gothics on west campus, which will participate in the house programs and meal plans.
