Ours is a world rich with diversity. Many of us dream of traveling the globe, exploring the myriad of cultures and ethnic traditions that differ from our own. At the Holland International Living Center (HILC) you will live among an international population without having to travel further than the room next door to explore a different culture. You may be there to lend a helping hand or to share the experience of a new student discovering what it is like to be in America for the first time. This mutual cross-cultural exchange is the commencement to understanding what it means to be a truly ''global community''.

HILC is home to 144 residents from countries all over the world - Argentina, Australia, China, Kuwait, Norway, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, and United States to name a few - and are a mix of first year, sophomores, juniors, seniors and grad students. At times as many as 60 different countries have been represented. Since many residents are a long way from home, HILC really does become a ''home away from home,'' where support and a friendly face is always there when you need it.

HILC was established in 1968 to provide a living center for international students, and opened as a residential center in 1970. Fifteen years later, the house was named the Jerome H. Holland International Living Center in honor of Mr. Holland's commitment to global understanding, respect for human rights, and the pursuit of education.

Located on North Campus, HILC is within a short walk to the Robert Purcell Community Center and the new Community Commons Center - both containing magnificent, modern dining facilities. It is also close to bus routes, a fitness center, and is one of the only residential communities that remains open during university breaks. Residents live in suite-style settings where they share a study room, a social lounge, and kitchen with others in their unit. HILC also has a library, a flag room, and bike room. There is also a large community lounge with a fireplace, grand piano, cable TV, and the infamous foosball table - a great place to hang out and socialize.

The lounge is also where many house activities, often planned and coordinated by the residents themselves or one of HILC's three Faculty Fellows. These may include such events as International Affairs Discussion Groups, various committee meetings, and faculty lectures. Social events like ice-cream hour, Rumba Casino, talent shows, and the International Dinner are also ongoing and enjoyed by all.

Although the focus of HILC is global political, economic, social, and cultural issues, the celebration and appreciation of activities that other cultures consider to be fun and interesting are often experienced during Country Night and are always a unique and memorable experience. Living in ''ILC'', as it is affectionately called, is an international experience you are guaranteed to never forget.
